A common idea in regards to fashion is the idea that "trends come and go" and are as quick to leave as they once came. In my own personal style, while I admire and incorporate trends into my style, I never like to revolve my wardrobe around what is popular at the time but rather look for alternative solutions to cultivate my own closet. However, an exception to this rule is the revival of 90s styles this year, in both high fashion and more common-people stores. Bright colors, chunky shilouettes, and sneakers make up some of my favorite elements of this decade and are things that I like to incorporate into my everyday attire.
Bright colors were huge this fall, deviating from the normal color palette that most people opt for this time of year. Reds, fuschias, yellows, and even neons decorated the shelves this fall, creating a world of color during the beginning of decay. Some ways that I enjoy to touch on this trend is through sticking to traditional colors for the most parts but adding pops of color where I feel it's needed to make an outfit more interesting. Adding a red sweater with light denim and neutral booties makes a statement while using minimal effort. A way to really amp up the 90s notions would be through adding colored accessories, such as a choker, to pay full homage to both a popular accessory from the era while also sticking with the colorful themes.
Baggy, or even, chunky shilouettes, is my personal favorite way to incorporate 90s trends into my own wardrobe. While I have always been interested in flowy, organic cuts, they have generally been for comfort purposes and personal preference rather than to make any form of a fashion statement. With the revival of 90s trends, I am now able to do both. Mom jeans are a great example of a baggy shape that has made its way into the heart of the fashion industry. After being ruled by the skinny jean for what seems like years now, mom jeans and "boyfriend" jeans can be found everywhere, accompanying the well-loved skinny jeans on shelves nation-wide. Windbreakers are another trend that allows both practicality and statement-making due to their variety of colors and brands. They provde warmth and protection while refreshing those around you of vibes from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air".
Sneakers have taken over markets across the nation, and I couldn't be more excited about it. Having never been a shoe enthusiast, this idea of looking forward to shoes is a new thing to me, but I find myself being unable to stop buying pairs of sneakers that I don't need. New Balance, Reebok, Converse, Vans. All of these are acceptable shoes to fill the void in your life that you didn't know was present. The plethora of brands avaliable provides styles, colors, and comfort to find a place in the wardrobes of any and everyone who may (or may not) need a pair. My favorites include a pair of green, suede New Balances that I have that add just enough casuality to any outfit I'm wearing. However, my classic black, high-top, Chuck Taylors always do the trick when I'm in any hurry to get out the door.
Trends may come and go, but the 90s are here to stay. This decade provides the perfect pieces to add for any person looking to embellish their wardrobes with something a little bit funky yet something comfy enough to wear everyday.
